Protecting Your Driveway From Residential Dumpster Rental Damage

Dec 20, 2021

Waste is getting waist-high. Americans produced more than 265 million tons of municipal waste in 2018.

When you've got waste in your house, you need to consider residential dumpster rental. But you can't just bring a dumpster out to your house. You need to learn how to rent a dumpster.

How can you prevent your dumpster rental from damaging your driveway? How should you throw your belongings away? What can you do to protect your yard and shed?

Answer these questions and you can get the excess stuff out of your house with minimal effort. Here is your quick guide.

Place Your Dumpster on Sturdy Materials

Even a small residential roll-off dumpster can damage a driveway. Tiles, bricks, and resin can crack under the weight of a dumpster. Moving a dumpster around can scratch the materials, making it harder to use your driveway.

The best surface to put your dumpster on is concrete. It will hold the weight, and it is sturdy enough that it will not scratch or have indentations on it. Asphalt is okay, but your dumpster may leave an impression on it over enough time.

Even if you are putting your dumpster on concrete, you should place boards directly underneath it. This will eliminate the risk of your dumpster damaging your driveway. Put one board at each corner.

Find Level Ground

It is essential that you put your dumpster on a level surface. A slight angle can make it hard for the residential roll-off dumpster rental company to remove your dumpster. A steep angle can cause your dumpster to fall or tilt over.

If you have an angle on your driveway, put your dumpster in a flat yard or at the end of it. You can also use boards to create a more even angle for the dumpster.

If your rental has wheels on it, make sure to lock them. You can use boards as shims to prevent them from sliding.

Be Conscious of the Temperature

Hot asphalt can become soft when temperatures get hot enough. This leaves it vulnerable to impressions under the heavy weight of your dumpster.

During the summertime, move your dumpster into the shade. If you don't have a tree that casts shade, move your dumpster to the side of a garage or shed.

You should also be careful during the wintertime, as ice can form around your dumpster. Spread salts that eat ice around it. Do not pour liquids into your dumpster.

Spread the Weight Out

Putting your dumpster on a sturdy surface and being conscious of the temperature will go a long way toward protecting your driveway. But you may still cause damage to your driveway, even with these measures. You have to adjust how you put things into your dumpster.

Lay the things you want to throw out on your driveway or in your yard. Try to figure out what your heaviest items are.

Break your dumpster into even areas, such as quarters. Then spread the weight of your belongings evenly through these areas.

When in doubt, place heavier items toward the center of your dumpster. If you consolidate weight in one corner, you risk leaving an impression or tilting the rental over.

You should also break things down. You can unscrew the legs and arms of a chair, and you can pull electronics apart.

There are certain things that should not go in your dumpster, such as unused medicines. Follow the FDA's recommendations for disposing of medicines

Don't leave your stuff out for too long. Water or dew can gather on your items, making them heavier. Put a tarp over your dumpster when you are done putting things in so water does not pool in it.

Be aware of dumpster rental capacities. If your belongings will exceed the capacity of your dumpster, you need to rent two dumpsters.

Clear the Area Around Your Dumpster

You may have a dumpster that won't damage anything. But you may damage your yard or shed while walking with belongings to throw away.

You should create a clear path between your house and your dumpster. Make sure the path is wide enough to accommodate bulky objects and carts you use to transport things.

If you have a path that cuts through a garden, you can lay a tarp over it. You can also put out pieces of cardboard or plywood to catch debris.

Try to create two or more paths for easy access to your dumpster. You can make one path that runs up your driveway and another path that connects to a shed or garage.

Be Careful Throwing Things In

Throwing in a heavy appliance or bulky piece of furniture can undo your safety measures. You can cause the dumpster to rattle and damage your driveway. You may miss the dumpster, throwing the object onto the driveway and cracking it.

Whenever possible, lower your things into your dumpster. You can use a ladder to climb over the side and place the objects down.

Use both hands when carrying and moving objects. Hold them from their bottoms and lift them upward while flexing your knees.

Find the Best Residential Dumpster Rental

You must be careful with a residential dumpster rental. Place your rental on concrete or asphalt and put pieces of wood underneath it.

You should also place your dumpster on a level surface and under the shade. Create an even distribution of weight in your rental.

Make sure you have paths to access your dumpster so you won't damage the grass or garden. Lower items in and do not drop things onto the ground.
